Weather is getting warmer and you may already planned your trip to the South of France. But are you in the mood already? Let us suggest you five movies that take place in the Côte d’Azur and will definitely put to you there.
1. To Catch a Thief
Starring Cary Grand and Grace Kelly, directed by Alfred Hitchcock To Catch a Thief (1955) is a classic thriller that follows a retired jewel thief who must prove his innocence when a new wave of robberies hits the French Riviera. This stylish and suspensful film is famous for its glamorous settings in Nice, Cannes or Èze, stunning cinematography, and the undeniable chemistry between Grant and Kelly. And of course it has that touch of romance you would expect from a picture like this.
2. And God Created Woman
And God Created Woman (1956) (Et Dieu… créa la femme) is a Roger Vadim movie that launched Brigitte Bardot into international stardom and helped cement Saint-Tropez as a jet-set destination. It tells the story of a sensual and free-spirited young woman whose presence disrupts the lives of several men. The film’s sun-drenched setting and Bardot’s iconic performance make it a must-watch.
3. La Piscine
Another classic and as well as an eye-candy in every sense is La Piscine (1969). Yes, the title is The Swimming Pool in English, but we I like the original French much better. This slow-burning psychological drama represents young Alain Delon, Romy Schneider and Jane Birkin in a a tale of love, jealousy, and murder centered around a luxurious villa’s swimming pool. The performances are magnetic, particularly from Delon and Schneider, who were once real-life lovers. The film’s sultry atmosphere and the beautiful Saint-Tropez setting add to its hypnotic tension.
4. Magic in the Moonlight
Magic in the Moonlight (2014) takes place in our favourite city, Antibes, and also other locations in the neighbourhood. This romantic Woody Allen comedy starring Colin Firth and Emma Stone is set in the 1920's and follows an English illusionist who tries to expose a supposed psychic while falling under her spell. The film’s elegant cinematography captures the beauty of the Côte d’Azur, from sun-drenched estates to the Mediterranean coastline. Firth and Stone deliver charming performances in this funny, old-fashioned romance.
5. Ronin
And finaly, if you're up to more excitement, here's something action-packed for you that plays in Nice. Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Natascha McElhone and Stellan Skarsgård stars in the once popular action film of the late 90's, Ronin (1998). This thriller, directed by John Frankenheimer, is known for its intense car chases through the narrow streets of the city. The plot revolves around mercenaries hired to steal a mysterious briefcase, leading to double-crosses and betrayals. The film’s fast-paced action, gripping suspense, and superb cast make it one of the best thrillers set in France.
